Dry needling targets tight, painful bands in muscle with a fine filament needle. At Phoenix Physio it's used as part of a wider physiotherapy plan, not on its own.
Dry needling uses very thin, sterile needles inserted into trigger points: tight, sensitive spots within a muscle that can cause local or referred pain. The aim is to reduce pain and muscle tension so you can move and exercise more comfortably.
It's called 'dry' needling because nothing is injected. Although the needles look similar to acupuncture needles, dry needling is based on a musculoskeletal assessment of your muscles and movement.
Dry needling is typically used when tight, sensitive areas in a muscle are contributing to pain or limiting movement, from neck, back and jaw problems to headaches and repetitive strain. Your physiotherapist will decide whether it suits your condition and how it fits with the rest of your plan.
Such as carpal tunnel syndrome.
Your physiotherapist will assess you first and explain whether dry needling is likely to help. If you go ahead, it's combined with other parts of your plan, usually exercise and hands-on treatment, so the benefits carry over into how you move day to day.
You may feel a brief prick as the needle goes in and sometimes a muscle twitch or deep ache, which usually settles quickly. Mild soreness for a day or two afterwards is common. Let your physiotherapist know if you're anxious about needles, take blood thinners or are pregnant.
Dry needling is available with physiotherapy at our clinic at 1801 Rutherford Road, Concord.

They use similar needles, but they're based on different approaches. Dry needling targets trigger points found during a musculoskeletal assessment, while acupuncture is based on traditional acupuncture principles. Phoenix Physio offers both.
Most people feel a quick pinch and sometimes a muscle twitch or ache. Discomfort usually fades quickly, though mild soreness can last a day or two.
Dry needling is part of physiotherapy at Phoenix Physio. Book a physiotherapy appointment online or call (905) 832-1110, and mention you're interested in dry needling.
